Project overview

SDC was tasked with refurbishing the tired and worn Sidgwick Lecture Theatre, to improve thermal performance and return the teaching spaces to acceptable standards.

SDC carried out asbestos removal, re-roofed the building for better insulation, and undertook a full M&E strip-out and replacement, including replacing the heating and ventilation systems. The building was redecorated, and the woodwork, metalwork, stone flooring and windows were restored.

The six lecture theatres, and six seminar rooms then re-opened for teaching on the 18th January, meeting the targeted date due to the team working extended hours and weekends throughout the project.

David Hills, Director of Programme Delivery at the University of Cambridge

‘I write to formally thank you and your team for the support and hard work in the successful delivery of the Sidgwick Lecture Block project. The agile approach to developing the design and cost envelope and commencement on site has rather broken new ground at the University and has been recognised as a great success for both our organisations working together. Please convey my thanks to everyone at SDC who played a part, it is much appreciated.’

“‘I am extremely gratified by how well this project has succeeded… By adopting a streamlined approach to appointing a contractor and giving them autonomy to act quickly, when necessary, we are able to complete the project to an extremely tight deadline, despite unexpected challenges along the way, and still bring it in under budget. That is a testimony to the hard work and ingenuity of everyone involved.”
