Overview

This project sought to repair and reinvigorate this listed and historically important building for the 21st century. Built in 1923 to the designs or Sir Walter Tapper, the building was recognised and listed as Grade II by Historic England in 2018, who noted it is of a ‘late Arts and Crafts design of considerable architectural merit’. Alongside these considerations, all alterations also had to adhere to current ECB (English Cricket Board) guidelines.

At the planning stages, the client was unsure that the space provided by the current building was sufficient to accommodate their needs. Plans to extend to the side or create a basement were considered. However, SDC and Ainsley & Partners produced a scheme to not only keep the building in its current, historically important form, but also save the added costs and environmental implications of major building works.

Overview

The scheme was devised to consider WELL Enabled, BREEAM, and WiredScore class leading certifications, underscoring a commitment to exemplary standards. Conscious of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, One Granta was designed to have state-of-the-art sustainability features, including 32 electric vehicle charging stations, with provision for expansion to 156, and ensures a minimum 25% reduction in carbon emissions. Sustainability is further enhanced by renewable technologies, such as air source heat pumps and rooftop photovoltaic array. The structure also boasts a full-length third-floor terrace, with outstanding views over Granta Park’s central green and beautiful countryside surroundings.
