On Wednesday 23rd October, SDC held a ground-breaking ceremony for Merlin Place. The historic tradition which dates to 113BC marks a significant step in the development of the project.

The event began with members of the site team, the Kadans team, and local press gathering to commemorate the start of the start of construction on site.

Due to be delivered in 2026, the project will provide 139,000 sq. ft (GIA) of premium purpose-built laboratory space & office accommodation comprising CL2 wet labs (with extract to atmosphere provision) and offices arranged over 6 storeys.

Located opposite the entrance to Cambridge Science Park, Merlin Place was developed by Kadans Science Partner, a leading investor in the development of ecosystems and real estate who create environments where scientific organisations can thrive. With Cambridge hailed as a global centre of excellence in science and technology innovation, the build is set to be an impressive addition to the north cluster.

Edward Joslin, Development Director at Kadans commented on the ceremony:

“We are proud of the rapid development we have made at Merlin Place, progressing quickly to the build stage. The new state-of-the-art innovation building aims to address the current lack of available laboratory space in the Cambridge cluster, providing fully fitted lab and office space bespoke to individual company requirements. We would like to thank those joining us at this breaking ground ceremony to celebrate this exciting milestone as we lay the foundation for future success”.

Board Director, Andy Shiner, was also in attendance and emphasised SDC’s dedication and commitment to working collaboratively with Kadans Science Partner:

“SDC Builders are proud to begin construction of a facility designed to support scientific research and innovation. Our role is to bring Kadan’s vision to life, ensuring the highest standards of functionality and efficiency. Today’s groundbreaking marks the start of that commitment and the beginning of an exciting and unique building.”

The event culminated with members from Hok Architect, PSK, Kadans and SDC breaking ground on the project. Once completed, Merlin Place will be a landmark building at the northern gateway to Cambridge.
